The most famous course in Canadian finance. Do you actually still need it?

For decades, the answer was automatic: want into the securities industry? Take the CSC. Your manager took it. Their manager took it. It was the front door.

Since January 2026, the honest answer is: it depends on where you're going — and getting this wrong costs about a thousand dollars in the wrong direction. So before anything else, here's the straight version:

You DO need the CSC if... your path runs through the mutual fund or exempt-market channels (where it remains a licensing course), through Quebec's AMF mutual fund licensing, or — this is the big one — toward the CIM or PFP designations, where the CSC is the mandatory first course in the education chain.
